Five people were detained by Odisha Police on Friday after they had allegedly beaten a 28-year-old Army jawan to death in the Ganjam district of Odisha.

According to police, the accused attacked Army jawan J Dilleswar Patra of Kalipalli, near Haripur, in the district on Sunday. They also stated that Patra passed away on Wednesday from his wounds in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

According to the police, the victim was posted in the Durgapur district of West Bengal at Pannagada.

The individuals who were taken into custody were recognized as J Kalyani Patra (19), Ch Sekhar Patra (23), B Cheneya Patra (26) from Kalipalli, B Bulu Patra (26) from Jagannathpur, and Ch Vicky Patra (26). Two motorbikes and two cell phones were seized from them, according to the police.

According to Ganjam SP Jagmohan Meena, the incident was caused by past animosity between two groups in the village.

A few months ago, Mr. Meena said, there was a fight in the village during Lord Ganesh’s immersion procession between two groups. One of the accused, Sekhar, led one group while Dilleswar led the other. Meena claims that Dilleswar mistreated another accused person a few days prior.

Dilleswar was here on leave about ten days ago, according to the police. He was travelled to Gopalpur on December 3 to attend a cricket match. A few of the accused and the victim got into a heated argument after the game.

The accused allegedly attacked him on the way back. He was taken to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here with critical injuries, and later on, he was transferred to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, where he passed away while receiving treatment, according to the police.

Investigators said they were looking into whether there were any additional suspects in the murder.
