In a letter to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and other congressional leaders on Monday, White House budget director Shalanda Young issued a warning: the United States was running out of time and resources to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
In October, the administration of US President Joe Biden requested nearly $106 billion from Congress to support its expansive plans for Israel, Ukraine and US border security.
With a slim majority, Republicans control the House of Representatives, and some lawmakers leaning to the right now find funding for Ukraine to be politically divisive.
In a letter made public by the White House, Young stated that stopping the supply of money and weapons to Ukraine would make Russian victories more likely.
“I want to be clear: without congressional action, by the end of the year we will run out of resources to procure more weapons and equipment for Ukraine and to provide equipment from US military stocks,” she wrote. “There is no magical pot of funding available to meet this moment. We are out of money — and nearly out of time.”
