China has agreed to undertake nuclear arms control talks with the United States next week, the first since the Obama administration.

According to the reports, the discussions aim to avert a disastrous three-way arms race between the US, China, and Russia, but they do not mark the start of formal negotiations to limit nuclear weapons.

A senior Biden administration official said that teams for US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reached an agreement in principle for the two leaders to meet in San Francisco in November, though critical specifics have still to be worked out.

In recent months, a flurry of bilateral diplomatic engagements has sought to rescue what were rapidly worsening ties between Beijing and Washington following the US downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the United States.
