Nigerian Chef Sets New World Record By Cooking Constantly For 100 Hours

On Monday, a Nigerian chef broke the previous record for the longest period of continuous cooking by cooking for 100 hours.

When Hilda Baci set out to break the Indian chef Lata Tondon’s 2019 record of 87 hours and 45 minutes, she had already been cooking since last Thursday.

In order to become a household name in the West African nation of Nigeria, Baci cooked for the hundredth hour on Monday at around 19:45 GMT in the Lekki neighbourhood of Lagos, the country’s commercial centre. She ceased cooking a few minutes later to the joy and acclaim of the thousands who had gathered there.

The effort by the chef to break the cooking record was made known via a tweet from Guinness World Records.

The international brand stated that before formally verifying a record, “we need to analyse all the information first.”

The Nigerian chef claimed on Thursday that she was trying to break the record in order to support young African women who are marginalised in society and to demonstrate how tenacious and industrious Nigerian kids are.

Baci said that she hoped the world would learn more about Nigerian cuisines. “Even when it comes to the companies you want to work with, it is like you have to go the additional mile to be taken seriously,” Baci said.

She began to prepare a variety of Nigerian specialties, including soups, stews, and different proteins, around 15:00 GMT on Thursday. One of the most well-known meals from West Africa, jollof rice, was also offered.

She has only taken five-minute breaks per hour or a total of one hour after a stretch of 12 hours for other activities like showering, getting checked up by the doctor, and sleeping. Thousands of locals and famous people cheered her on at the scene day and night, and countless others watched online via various streaming services.

After she surpassed the current cooking record, President Muhammadu Buhari tweeted that Monday was a great day for Nigeria. “Hilda’s drive, ambition and resilience have brought great interest and insight into the uniqueness of Nigerian food,” said Buhari.

As Baci neared the 100-hour mark, Kingsley Ofoma at the scene said he never doubted her to surpass the global record. “The energy here is very high and positive, everybody is having fun,” he said. “So eating her food free of charge is not even the best of it.”
