Joe Biden with Benjamin Netanyahu
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left for Washington to deliver a politically precarious speech before the US Congress amid uncertainty following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
The speech, which could cause disarray on both sides of the ocean, will focus on Israel’s bipartisanship and America’s commitment to remain a key alley in the Middle East, regardless of the American people’s choice of their next president.
Before stepping on the plane, Netanyahu said “In this time of war and uncertainty, it’s important that Israel’s enemies know that Washington and Israel stand together”, adding that he would meet Biden and thank him for his support for Israel.
The speech is expected to highlight the ongoing efforts to bring about a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli Prime Minister is scheduled to address Congress on Wednesday. He will also meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. It is unclear whether he will meet Trump.
The war, sparked by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, has tested Israel’s ties with its top ally as never before.
