"India Will Do Everything In Its Power To Put An End To War," PM Modi To Volodymyr Zelenskyy
In their first bilateral meeting since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that India would do everything in its power to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict via negotiations and diplomacy and to lessen the suffering of the Ukrainian people.
In the meeting that the president of Ukraine had requested, Modi reassured Zelensky that India would continue to provide humanitarian supplies.
Additionally, Modi informed Zelenskyy that he was the only one who truly knew the suffering of war and that the situation in Ukraine was not one of politics or economics but rather one of humanity and human values.
Modi was once more invited by Zelenskyy to participate in the implementation of the Ukraine Peace Formula.
The gathering was held concurrently with the G7 conference in Hiroshima, which introduced further penalties against Russia.
Zelenskyy also extended an invitation to Modi to visit Ukraine, but after the meeting, foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra acknowledged that the Ukrainian leader had not received a G20 invitation from Modi.
India will host the summit in September. He claimed the it was not discussed during the meeting.
The conflict in Ukraine is a major concern for the entire world. It has had a wide range of effects on the planet. When our children came home last year, they conveyed the situation in Ukraine in a way that helped me appreciate your suffering and that of the Ukrainian people.
I want to assure you that India, and I in my personal capacity, would do whatever we can to resolve the situation,’’ said Modi in his public remarks to the president.
Zelenskyy thanked Modi for supporting “our country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, in particular, at the platforms of international organizations, and for providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine’’.
According to Kwatra, while expressing concerns about the war, Modi spoke about the wider impact of the conflict on the developing world including economic insecurities in the form of food, fuel and fertilizer shortages.
“Prime Minister appreciated Ukraine’s cooperation in the safe evacuation of Indian students and welcomed the decision by Ukrainian institutions to hold examinations in India for the students.
Prime Minister conveyed India’s clear support for dialogue and diplomacy to find a way forward. He said that for a resolution of the situation, India and Prime Minister personally would do everything within our means,’’ said the Indian government in its readout of the meeting. Modi had in the past too told Zelenskyy that India remained ready to support any peace initiative.
While the 2 leaders had spoken on several occasions on the phone in the past 15 months, this was their first in-person meeting since they last met on the sidelines of the Glasgow climate conference in 2021. According to the government, Zelenskyy briefed Modi about the situation in Ukraine and the 2 leaders agreed to remain in touch.
