A massive fire burned hundreds of shops at a market in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, but there were no casualties as the blaze rushed across the neighborhood early Thursday before stores opened.
Officials stated it took six hours for military personnel and firefighters to put out the fire, which spread swiftly in the Mohammadpur market due to the significant volume of flammable products like cooking oil and plastics.
According to Shahjahan Sikder, a fire service officer, there were no casualties in the fire, which was likely sparked by an electric short circuit.
“My family was dependent on this shop, what to do now? All burnt to ashes”, a shopowner stated.
Fires are widespread in densely crowded Dhaka, which has seen a recent building boom, often without sufficient safety measures. Fires and explosions are frequently caused by malfunctioning gas cylinders, air conditioners, and bad electrical equipment.
In April, a fire in a Dhaka shopping complex injured numerous firefighters and destroyed 5,000 businesses.
