The Canadian government has officially designated Samidoun, a group known for advocating on behalf of Palestinian prisoners, as a terrorist organization.
This action, announced by Public Safety Canada, places Samidoun on the list of entities associated with terrorism under the Criminal Code.
The government’s statement asserts that Samidoun closely aligns itself with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group already designated as a terrorist entity by Canada, the United States, and the European Union.
Additionally, the government claims that Samidoun operates in support of the PFLP’s objectives and works to further its influence.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc however commented on the listing, stating that the inclusion of Samidoun underscores Canada’s commitment to safeguarding national security.
In his official statement, LeBlanc asserted, “This designation serves as a clear signal that activities threatening Canada’s security will not be tolerated.”
Samidoun however has also faced similar designations in countries like the United States and Germany.
With this new addition, the number of groups listed as terrorist entities under Canadian law has now reached 78.
The designation imposes legal restrictions on Samidoun’s activities, including bans on fundraising, recruitment, and travel associated with terrorism.
