The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi signed a pact on Wednesday to establish a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AI-CoE).
The new centre will focus on AI-based tools for national health programmes. It aims to support India’s public health systems.
“This MoU begins a long journey of research that can change Indian healthcare,” said AIIMS Delhi Director Prof M Srinivas.
“A partnership like this can transform AI in healthcare. We’re excited to shape this national centre,” added IIT Delhi Director Prof Rangan Banerjee.
The two directors signed the MoU at a ceremony at IIT Delhi.
Last year, the Ministry of Education gave the institutes a ₹330 crore grant. It came under the ‘Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ scheme.
The CoE will use the grant for its projects. The goal is to keep patients at the core. It also aims to benefit every Indian citizen.
Experts said the centre will act as a major hub at the national and global levels. It will create AI tools to improve India’s public health.
Prof Chetan Arora will lead the centre from IIT Delhi. He said, “We want to create advanced AI tools to boost services, train workers, and reach remote communities.”
AIIMS and IIT Delhi have worked together before. They launched the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in Disability & Assistive Technology (CARE-DAT). It focuses on helping people with disabilities.
