OpenAI, in collaboration with the Indian government’s IndiaAI mission, launched its first international educational platform expansion on Thursday with the introduction of ‘OpenAI Academy India’, an initiative aimed at democratizing access to AI education by equipping learners across India with critical skills in artificial intelligence.
OpenAI Academy India Supports India’s ‘FutureSkills’ Vision
The academy will support the IndiaAI Mission’s ‘FutureSkills’ pillar by delivering AI training to a diverse audience, including students, developers, educators, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners.
OpenAI has tailored the program specifically for India, offering both digital and in-person learning modules in English and Hindi, with more regional languages to follow.
Government Lauds ‘OpenAI Academy India’ Initiative
Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, hailed the launch as a major stride toward democratizing technology.
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is ensuring that the benefits of cutting-edge innovation reach every citizen,” he said.
He further emphasised the initiative’s potential to empower startups, developers, and researchers, noting, “The launch of OpenAI Academy will strengthen India’s AI Mission by enabling greater community learning, fostering innovation, and accelerating the development of locally relevant solutions.”
Courses Hosted On iGOT Karmayogi Platform
OpenAI will host its educational content on the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which serves as a training hub for government officials. The content will initially be available in English and Hindi, with expansion into four other regional languages planned.
The academy will conduct webinars and in-person workshops in six cities, led by OpenAI experts and local partners. It will also offer $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 fellows or startups approved under the IndiaAI Mission.
OpenAI will train 1 million teachers in Generative AI to promote broad AI literacy.

“India is one of the most dynamic countries for AI development. We’re proud to launch OpenAI Academy India and help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives,” he said.
