Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan
The 14-year sentence given to former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana corruption case was suspended by a Pakistani high court on Monday.
Days before the general elections, on January 31, both were sentenced by accountability court in Islamabad.
In the Toshakhana case, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) stayed their sentence on Monday.
The appeal against the punishment will be scheduled for hearing following the Eid holidays, according to IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.
The 71-year-old politician and former cricket player is charged in the Toshakhana corruption case with keeping costly official gifts that he acquired while serving as Pakistan’s premier.
Government officials are allowed to keep gifts under the regulations of Toshakhana, a Persian word meaning “treasure house,” provided they pay a fee and deposit the gift beforehand. Khan and his spouse either neglected to deposit the gift or obtained it at a reduced cost by purportedly abusing their position of power.
