The minister said the length of four-lane-plus NH network, including high-speed corridors, has increased by more than 250 per cent from about 18,371 km in March 2014 to about 46,179 km so far.

The ministry has also placed a strong emphasis on upgrading less than two-lane non-highway (NH) areas to a minimum of two-lane or two-lane with paved shoulders.

As of now, the distance from Delhi to Katra is 727 km and with the construction of this route the distance will be curtailed by 58 km.

He revealed plans for the upcoming Urban Extension Road 2, a major ring road project in Delhi, which is set to open in 2-3 months.

A policy is being made to ensure the national highways are free of potholes and young engineers will be roped in to make the project a success.

JP Nadda and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari were also present in the meeting, while the host ministers are Pralhad Joshi and V Muraleedharan, the source said.

Nitin Gadkari, the Union's minister of road transport, revealed on Monday that he had approved a proposal to make air conditioning mandatory.
