After Kohli announced his retirement as Team India’s Test captain in January 2022, it was clear that not all was well between him and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and then-chief selector Chetan Sharma.
Kohli had already stepped down as T20I captain a few months ago. His resignation as Test captain was even more unexpected. Ganguly and Sharma told the media at the time that Kohli was asked not to resign as T20 captain.
At a press conference ahead of his trip to South Africa in January 2022, Kohli denied receiving any such calls from the two. That statement from Kohli was enough to confirm his feud with Ganguly.

According to reports
Kohli was dissatisfied with the BCCI selectors’ decision to split captaincy. Sharma reportedly called Kohli to ask him to captain the T20 team while Rohit Sharma was named ODI captain.
However, the Delhi-born cricketer made the decision not to lead Team India in coloured clothing after this call.
This entire episode leads to the conclusion that, while Kohli was removed as ODI captain by selectors, he resigned as T20I and Test captain against the wishes of the former selector and BCCI president.
