Women’s Equality Day 2023: Know About It’s History, Significance And Celebration

Women’s Equality Day will commemorate the historic victory of women, who comprise half of the population, in their fight for the right to vote in the USA in 1920. The US Constitution’s 19th Amendment was certified in 1920 on this day. Women were now able to vote thanks to the amendment.

After the amendment, no US state or the federal government could deny any American citizens the right to vote on the grounds of gender. Every year, the day is observed on August 26 each year.

History and Significance

Women were not permitted to inherit property in the early 19th century. In any job that was available at the time, they were paid half what a man made. American women were forced to demand and protest for their political rights and representation due to the extreme inequality between men and women.

As this movement spread throughout the world in the early 19th century, nations like Finland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom legalized voting for women.

After that, in 1878, the United States passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. It was unable to gain momentum at that time. Only after World War One did women’s contributions to the war effort become more prominent in the economy.

How this day is celebrated?

Seminars and talks are usually held on this day to raise awareness women’s place gender equality and the place of women’s in the society. On this day, educational activities are organized by all schools, universities, and organizations. Besides this, art galleries, museums, and other cultural also host exhibitions that honor the contributions of women in various professions, highlight their accomplishments, and explore gender equality-related topics.
