Over 50 Patients Pass Away In 3 Days At Ballia District Hospital
A team from the Lucknow health department has arrived at the hospital to determine the cause of deaths after 54 patients who had been hospitalised to the Ballia district hospital in Uttar Pradesh died in the previous three days, according to officials on Sunday.
According to them, about 400 patients were admitted to the district hospital between June 15 and June 17, and all of the patients who passed away in the government hospital were older than 60.
Meanwhile, Dr. Divakar Singh, the district hospital’s Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS), was punished and sent to Azamgarh, purportedly as a result of a casual remark he made about the causes of fatalities.
A senior official announced that Dr. S. K. Yadav has been given responsibility for CMS.
Dr. Jayant Kumar, the chief medical officer (CMO) for Ballia, reported that two persons have passed away in the district from heat stroke as of Sunday.
“As per records of the district hospital, of the 54 deaths, 40 per cent of the patients had fever, while 60 per cent were suffering from other diseases. So far, only two persons have died due to heat stroke in the district,” Kumar told the media.
According to CMS Yadav, the hospital is under pressure because 125 to 135 patients are admitted every day.
“On June 15, as many as 154 patients were admitted to the district hospital, of which 23 patients died due to various reasons. While 20 patients died on June 16, 11 passed away on the following day. They were all aged above 60 years,” he added.
Health officials estimate that the district hospital reports roughly eight deaths each day on average.
O P Tiwari, the additional director of the Azamgarh division’s health department, announced on Saturday that a team from Lucknow would travel to Ballia to conduct testing before determining the reason for the deaths.
“Maybe there is a disease, which could not be detected. The temperature is also high in the region. During the summers and winters, death rates among diabetic patients and those with breathing difficulties and blood pressure usually increase,” Tiwari said.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar stated on Sunday that the district hospital now has extra beds available to accommodate more patients.
“In order to ensure that patients at the district hospital do not face any difficulties, some air coolers and air-conditioners have been arranged. Apart from this, 15 beds have also been increased,” he said.
The DM also said, “CMS Dr. Divakar Singh has been sent to Azamgarh since he gave wrong information about death figures.”
Brajesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister who is also in charge of health, stated, “Because he had made a reckless statement without knowledge of the heatwave, the superintendent has been fired.
The identification and treatment of every patient has been mandated for all chief medical officers and chief medical superintendents in the state.”
