In Kerala’s Wayanad district on Saturday, a 36-year-old farmer named Prajeesh was attacked by a tiger and was partially eaten.
The Kerala Forest Department responded to the incident by issuing an order on Sunday that permitted the animal’s death. But the directive stated that before taking any deadly action, authorities had to make sure the tiger was indeed a man-eater.
As per the order, “If the animal cannot be captured or tranquilised, and it is established as a man-eater, then it should be killed, as it has become dangerous to human life in the region.”
Eleven cameras have been placed around the forest department as part of increased efforts to find the tiger.
The attack and partial consumption of Prajeesh’s corpse by the tiger happened on Saturday.
People from the area, who were shocked by what had happened, congregated at the scene and fought the police when they tried to take the victim’s body away.
In the Wayanad district earlier this year, in January, a 52-year-old farmer lost his life due to attacks by tigers.
