Rahul Gandhi Returns As Wayanad MP, Congress Says, “Victory Of Love Against Hate”

While ordering a stay on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on Friday, the Supreme Court stated that while his words were not in good taste, his removal from parliament would have an impact on his people.

Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi was restored as member of parliament today after Supreme Court put a stay on conviction in a criminal defamation case over his Modi Surname remark. Mr Gandhi will return to the Lok Sabha, representing Wayanad, at a time when the parliament has been repeatedly disrupted by the Opposition group INDIA’s demand for a dedicated session on violence in Manipur, which would be preceded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on the subject.

INDIA alliance leaders were seen eating sweets while celebrating the occasion.

Indian National Congress tweeted, “Nafrat ke Khilaaf Mohabbat ki Jeet( Victory of love against hate) after the stay. Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor tweeted, “With enormous relief, welcome the official announcement of @RahulGandhi’s reinstatement. He can now resume his duties in the Lok Sabha to serve the people of India and his constituents in Wayanad. A victory for justice and for our democracy!”

While ordering a stay on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction on Friday, the Supreme Court stated that while his words were not in good taste, his removal from parliament would have an impact on his people. “The ramifications of disqualification not just affects the rights of the individual but also the electorate,” the judges said.

Mr Gandhi was disqualified in May after receiving a two-year prison sentence in a defamation case for commenting over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. While taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Gandhi said at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar ahead of the 2019 general election, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

After the stay on his conviction Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Come what may, my duty remains the same. Protect the idea of India”. Several other criminal defamation cases against Mr Gandhi are pending, including “the high-profile case of mudslinging the venerable Veer Savarkar” filed by the freedom fighter’s family, according to BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya.
