PM Modi To Inaugurate New Parliament Building On Savarkar Anniversary

Savarkar was detained in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Cellular Jail when those islands were under British control.

Nine years of the Narendra Modi-led federal administration

The new Parliament building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (May 28) coinciding with the 140th birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar.

The four-story structure has room for more than 1,200 MPs.

On Thursday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met with the prime minister and extended an invitation for him to dedicate the new Capitol.

The government’s intention to open the new Parliament building during the final week of this month, as well as the significance of Savarkar’s birth anniversary on May 28, were both covered by the media on Wednesday. Savarkar was detained in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Cellular Jail when those islands were under British control.

The government stated in a release that the new structure “symbolises the spirit of self-reliant India or Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

An elaborate event to dedicate the new structure was reportedly planned for the ninth anniversary of the Modi administration. On May 26, 2014, PM Narendra Modi took the oath of office, making it nine years ago.

PM Modi laid the cornerstone for the new Parliament building in December 2020. The new structure is a component of the Central Vista’s revitalization as the country’s power corridor.

The new Parliament building, constructed by Tata Projects Ltd, will have a grand constitution hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.

In the new parliament, marshals of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will have a new dress code.

To mark the ninth anniversary of its government at the Centre, the BJP has planned a month-long outreach exercise, including a rally by Prime Minister Modi and 51 public meetings by its senior leaders.

The campaign is expected to start from May 30, the day PM Modi took oath for his second term as prime minister in 2019, and will continue till June 30, sources told the press. PM Modi is likely to address a rally on either May 30 or May 31 to kickstart the exercise.
