PM Modi Meets Canadian FM Anita Anand As India-Canada Ties Gain Momentum

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, highlighting renewed momentum in India-Canada relations and opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation amid global uncertainty.

“This week, I’m in New Delhi to build on the renewed momentum between Canada and India, and advance our shared priorities in trade, investment and security,” Anand wrote on X on Wednesday.

Anand said nearly 80 years of diplomatic ties, Canadian PM Mark Carney’s visit and the ongoing Team Canada Trade Mission had strengthened bilateral engagement. She also said Canada looked forward to welcoming PM Modi in December.

PM Modi said he and Anand discussed cooperation in trade, technology, security, energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.

“India is committed to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” he wrote on X.

Jaishankar said he and Anand reviewed progress in trade and investment, education, energy, defence and people-to-people exchanges. They also discussed key regional and global developments.

The External Affairs Ministry said Anand’s visit was her third to India since June 2025, reflecting sustained high-level engagement and positive momentum in bilateral relations.

Jaishankar and Anand joined former Australian PM Kevin Rudd and former British PM Rishi Sunak at a Bloomberg New Economy Forum panel in New Delhi, where Jaishankar highlighted cooperation among middle powers.

Anand’s October 13-16 visit to India and the UAE focuses on trade, energy, security and defence. Her meeting with Jaishankar was their 11th since September 2025.

India-Canada trade reached $30.4 billion in 2025, including $11 billion in goods, as ties recovered from the diplomatic tensions of 2023 and 2024.
