The approved allocation will support the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme, which provides social security assistance to eligible beneficiaries.
The initiative aims to extend financial support to vulnerable households, including elderly people, widows and persons with disabilities, under the applicable schemes.
Shah also highlighted changes to disability pension eligibility. According to his post, reducing the disability threshold from 80 per cent to 40 per cent will allow more persons with disabilities to access support.
The expansion will cover persons with disabilities from birth, helping more families access social security benefits.
The Cabinet approved ₹53,428 crore to continue the programme from 2026-27 to 2030-31, benefiting 3.20 crore people across all 36 States and Union Territories.
Shah highlighted the government’s focus on social assistance and financial security for disadvantaged groups. The expanded disability pension coverage aims to improve welfare access for eligible beneficiaries and their families.
