Mumbai Man Arrested For Using Aurangzeb’s Image As Profile Picture, Charged Under These IPC Sections

A man from Mumbai was arrested for allegedly using Aurangzeb’s image as his WhatsApp profile picture after a Hindu Organisation reported against it.

Navi Mumbai Police lodged a FIR against a man for allegedly using Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s image as his WhatsApp profile picture after a Hindu Organisation raised the issue on Sunday.

The man works in a mobile service company and was arrested by the police in Vashi after which he was allowed to go and a notice was issued to him.

According to a police official, “The Hindu Organisation submitted the screenshot of Aurangzeb’s profile picture after which a case was under sections 298 (Uttering words, etc, with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and 153-A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Recently in various cities of Maharashtra communal violence took place over the glorification of Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan on social media.

During a demonstration against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image with an offensive audio message as a social media “status” by a few residents on Wednesday, protesters threw stones in Kolhapur.

Earlier, in a rally in Ahmednagar, pictures of Aurangzeb were exhibited. Stones were thrown during a Sakal Hindu Samaj rally in Sangamner town in protest of the reported death of a boy. Five automobiles were harmed, and two people were hurt.

Separately, police said that during a religious procession again in Sangamner, a poster of Aurangzeb was shown and offensive remarks were raised.
