Union Home Minister Amit Shah has congratulated top gymnast Dipa Karmakar for winning the first gold medal for India at the Asian Senior Championships. The Home Minister wrote in his post, “Congratulations to one of our top gymnasts, Dipa Karmakar, who created history today by winning first gold medal for India at the Asian Senior Championships. Top gymnast Dipa Karmakar won a historic gold medal at the Asian Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tashkent on Sunday. In the individual vault final, Karmakar topped the field of eight gymnasts with an average score of 13.566. In both her attempts, the 30-year-old got identical scores of 13.566. North Koreans Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966) won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Deepa won the bronze medal in 2015
Earlier, Karmakar had won a bronze medal in the same event in Hiroshima in 2015. She became a household name in the country after finishing fourth in the vault final at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Karmakar also won a bronze medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. Karmakar returned to action last year after serving a 21-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance.
