The Communist Party of India (CPI) has got a notice from the income-tax department requesting that it to pay “dues” of Rs 11 crore for filing tax returns over the previous few years using an outdated PAN card.
They claimed that in order to challenge the tax authorities’ notice, the Left party is speaking with its attorneys.
According to the sources, penalties and interest owed to the authorities for “discrepancies” in the party’s use of an outdated PAN card are among the “dues” that need to be paid to the I-T department.
A senior CPI leader said, “We are seeking legal assistance and consulting our lawyers.”
The Congress had earlier announced that it has received I-T notice requesting payment of almost Rs 1,823 crore for discrepancies in tax returns from prior years.
Leader of the Trinamool Congress, Saket Gokhale, has further stated that he has been sent eleven I-T notices in the past forty-eight hours.
In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has been accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre of attempting to “cripple” the opposition.
