Despite being ill, former prime minister Manmohan Singh visited Parliament on Monday to participate in the Rajya Sabha proceedings and cast a vote against the Delhi services bill, which was ultimately approved by the House.
Manmohan Singh was hailed for his “integrity” by the opposition, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) referred to it as “extremely shameful.”
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha thanked the former prime minister for his presence in the House and said, “Today, in the Rajya Sabha, Manmohan Singh stood as a beacon of integrity and came especially to vote against the black ordinance. His unwavering commitment to democracy and the Constitution is a profound inspiration. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to him for his invaluable support. Thank you, sir.”
The 90-year-old veteran of the Congress’ presence in the Rajya Sabha sparked a verbal exchange between the BJP and the Opposition. The BJP slammed the Congress and said, “The country will remember this madness of Congress! The Congress kept a former prime minister sitting on a wheelchair late at night in Parliament even in such a state of health, that too, just to keep their dishonest alliance alive! Extremely shameful!”
Manmohan Singh’s attendance in the Rajya Sabha, according to Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, demonstrated the former prime minister’s “faith in democracy” in response to criticism from the BJP.
Ailing Sibhu Soren of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was also present at Upper House other than Manmohan Singh.
CM of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, had a setback on Monday, August 7, when the Rajya Sabha passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, also known as the Delhi services bill.
With 131 votes in favor and 101 votes against, the bill was approved. On August 3, the Lok Sabha approved the law that had been a reason behind conflict between the Aam Aadmi Party and the government.
