Delhi Services Act to become a law after President Droupadi Murmu’s approval. On August 1, The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The controversial Ordinance on the control of services in the national capital is to be replaced by this measure.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on August 7 with 131 votes in favor and 102 votes against, the law was approved by the Upper House which allowed central government’s control over bureaucrats transfers and posting in the national capital.
The Bill suggested giving the center authority over decisions regarding the suspension and investigation of national capital authorities. It was introduced into the Parliament amid the Manipur issue caused a stir both in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The administration introduced the bill in parliament for control of services and officer posting in Delhi, and the majority of the opposition parties opposed it, making the monsoon session of the Parliament tense.
The Center’s May 19-issued Ordinance was intended to be replaced by the Delhi Services Bill. The Supreme Court’s decision that the Delhi Government had responsibility over the management and control of civil personnel, with the exception of subjects pertaining to public order, police, and land, led to the issuance of the ordinance a week later.
According to AAP, the most “undemocratic” piece of paper ever presented in Parliament was the bill.
