In a case involving UAPA and sedition about his alleged inflammatory remarks against the Citizenship Amendment Act at Aligarh Muslim University and near Jamia of the national capital, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted statutory bail to Sharjeel Imam.
Imam’s request for bail was granted by a division bench made up of Justices Manoj Jain and Suresh Kumar Kait. In the case, he had contested the trial court’s decision to refuse him statutory bail.
Imam had requested release based on the fact that he had already served half of the seven-year maximum sentence.
Imam’s attorneys Talib Mustafa and Ahmed Ibrahim made an appearance. The Delhi Police was represented by SPP Rajat Nair.
Representing Imam, Mustafa argued that Imam had already served four years and seven months of the seven years of maximum sentence.
The date of the charge-framing and witness examination, among other dates, were noted by the court before accepting the plea.
The trial court rejected his plea on February 17, noting that his remarks and deeds “mobilized the public,” upsetting the nation’s capital and maybe serving as the primary catalyst for the 2020 riots.
