Court Reserves May 28 To Give Verdict On Bail Plea Of JNU Student Umar Khalid In Delhi Riots Case

The court reserved May 28 to give its verdict on bail plea of former JNU student Umar Khalid in Delhi riots case. He is an accused in case of an alleged conspiracy behind the communal riots that took place in North-East Delhi in the year 2020.

Khalid has been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and has been in jail since September 2020. Karkardooma Court’s Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, who is hearing Khalid’s second bail plea, said the order will be done on May 28.

Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad had presented his written arguments against Khalid’s plea. Earlier, Prasad had argued against granting bail to Khalid, saying that his WhatsApp chats revealed that he had a habit of fabricating stories on social media to influence the bail hearing. Khalid’s lawyer countered this argument, asking whether sharing WhatsApp messages was a criminal or terrorist act.
