“CAA Is Ramadan Gift To Muslims”: National Conference Leader Omar Abdullah Takes Dig At BJP

Omar Abdullah, the head of the National Conference, took a dig at ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) just days before the Lok Sabha polls were announced.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Abdullah mockingly said that the BJP’s “Ramadan gift” to the Muslims was the CAA notification.

He said, “They have given a Ramadan gift to the Muslims of the country by notifying the CAA. We regret it.”

News Agency PTI quoted, “It was passed in 2019, but notifying the CAA (rules) just a few days before the bugle of elections is to be blown, perhaps it makes it clear what the aim is. They (BJP) were saying that after the (construction) of the Ram Temple, they cannot lose. But perhaps they feel that their position is weak and that is why they have to use these new weapons.”

He said, “The Muslims have always been a target of the BJP, which is not something new for the party. Even in the CAA, the Muslims have been made a specific target. This is not new politics for the BJP, this has been their approach before as well.”

According to Abdullah, it is clear that the BJP intends to use religion to influence the next Lok Sabha elections.

Five years after it was passed by Parliament, the Citizenship Amendment Act was put into effect by the Center on Monday.

After being passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, the CAA has generated a great deal of discussion and widespread opposition throughout India.

The Citizenship Act of 1955 is amended by the CAA to give citizenship to migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who are members of the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities and who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014.
