KOLKATA: A BJP candidate's brother-in- law's body was discovered in Cooch Behar district

KOLKATA: A BJP candidate’s brother-in- law’s body was discovered in Cooch Behar district amid the violence leading up to the panchayat elections in West Bengal on July 8.

On Saturday night, unidentified youngsters contacted Sambhu Das, who is about 30 years old, outside his residence, according to the police.

His stabbed body was discovered close to a pond many hours later.

BJP leader Ajoy Roy alleged that Das, who had supported the name of Bisakha Das as a BJP gram panchayat candidate from Dasgram area in Dinhata, was murdered by Trinamool supporters.

Denying Roy’s claim, West Bengal minister and Trinamool’s Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha said the party had no role in the incident and Das was not a political activist.

“Das was killed due to a personal feud. The BJP gives a political twist to every crime in West Bengal and links it with the panchayat polls,” he told reporters.

Police in Malda district said that miscreants attacked and killed Trianmool candidate Mustafa Sheikh in the Sujapur neighbourhood. Police stated that after being transferred to a hospital, he was declared dead.

Former TMC activists who joined the Congress after being refused tickets, according to state minister Sabina Yeasmin, were responsible for the attack on Sheikh.

At least seven people have died and numerous others have been injured in widespread violence related to the nomination process for the three-tier panchayat elections across the state.
