Assam Rifles recovers 13 bodies after firing incident in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district

Following reports of a firing incident in Tengnoupal, Manipur, on Monday, the Assam Rifles launched an operation in the area. Thirteen bodies were found in the Tengnoupal district after the operation.

An official stated that the incident happened at noon.

“Once our forces moved in and reached the place, they found 13 bodies in Leithu village. The forces did not find any weapons next to the bodies,” the official said.

According to the official source, the dead in the Leithu area did not appear to be locals, raising the possibility that they were outsiders who got into a firefight with another group.

The report also stated that the identities of the deceased are still unknown.

Notably, the Kuki-Zo tribal groups in Tengnoupal district celebrated the ‘Peace Agreement’ that the Indian government and the militant Meitei faction, the UNLF (Pambei), recently reached on December 3.

With a few exceptions, the Manipur government on Sunday reinstated mobile internet service throughout the state until December 18.

“Considering improvement in law and order and inconveniences faced by people due to the mobile internet ban, the state government has decided to relax the suspension,” the notification said.

There will still be a suspension of operations for mobile towers that provide services within a 2 km radius along the border between districts like Chandel and Kakching, Churachandpur and Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kakching, Kangpokpi and Imphal West, Kangpokpi and Imphal East, Kangpokpi and Thoubal, and Tengnoupal and Kakching.

Following the outbreak of violence in the state on May 3, mobile internet service was suspended.
