The AIADMK criticized Vinoj P Selvam, the BJP’s nominee for the Chennai Central Lok Sabha, for going to the tombs of former chief ministers MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa on Wednesday. Former BJP ally AIADMK referred to Selvam as “shameless” and said the action showed BJP’s desperation.
Vinoj Selvam offered flower tributes to the AIADMK stalwarts at the MGR and Amma Memorial at Marina Beach.
In a post on X Selvam said, “Paid my respects to Puratchi Thalaivar and Puratchi Thalaivi who remained a stopping force against evil DMK and vowed to defeat DMK in Central Chennai”.
The AIADMK was offended by the action, and party spokesperson Kovai Sathyan questioned Selvam’s motivation for going to the memorials.
“The sudden new-found love on the last day of the campaign clearly indicates the desperation of the BJP. Taking the names of our leaders at political rallies will not go well with the people,” Sathyan said.
He went on to say that the BJP was attempting to divide votes by engaging in a “illicit affair” with the DMK.
Vinoj responded to the criticism by stating that MGR and Jayalalithaa are not exclusive members of the AIADMK.
“Both leaders were loved by the people of Tamil Nadu. Keeping politics aside, I had come here to pay respect to both the leaders,” he said, adding that the AIADMK had “forgotten its leaders”.
