Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced today that the Center will designate an officer to monitor such content, amid a wave of deepfake videos on social media that have caused widespread distress and anguish.
“Officer will be appointed to ensure action against deepfake content,” he said after meeting social media companies.
As per him, social media companies have seven days to update their terms of service in compliance with IT regulations.
According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the government will help people file First Information Reports, or FIRs, against social media companies.
According to the minister, an FIR will be filed against the intermediary, and if they reveal the origins of the content, legal action will be taken against the entity that posted it.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology sent social media platforms an advisory outlining the legal provisions that cover deepfakes of this kind and the potential penalties associated with their creation and distribution.
The minister went on to say that the government is dedicated to giving Indians confidence and safety in the digital sphere.
According to the Center, producing and disseminating deepfakes is punishable with strict penality of ₹ 1 lakh and up to three years in prison.
