Elon Musk, the owner of X, and Linda Yaccarino, the CEO, recently spoke to the staff during an all-hands meeting. The pair allegedly discussed in the meeting the changes that the once-named Twitter platform has undergone in the last year as well as Musk’s goals for the business. Plans to start a news distribution service was one on the list.
The news distribution service, which may go by the name XWire, is rumoured to compete with current newswire and press release distribution platforms like Cision’s PR Newswire.
Indeed, Musk is placing a significant wager on X becoming a reliable news source. According to his statement from last week, X is a “open source news” platform that already offers content from legacy media that is relevant.
Last month, Musk motivated his followers to do citizen journalism on X. “Please encourage more citizen journalism! You can do live video easily from your phone. More on-the-ground reporting from regular citizens will change the world,” he posted.
While X intends to develop into a news-friendly platform and encourage journalists to publish original content, Instagram Threads, the platform’s direct rival, is shifting away from the news. Last month, Adam Mosseri, the platform’s CEO, declared that the company had no intention of “amplifying” news on its platform.
