Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Wednesday emphasised the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. In his speech, he included balanced eating, regular physical activity, and stress management to reduce the risk of strokes.

His message came on the occasion of World Stroke Day, observed every year on October 29.

This was started to spread awareness about prevention, treatment and better support for stroke survivors.

The global theme for 2025 is ‘Every Minute Counts.’

Highlighting that strokes can strike suddenly but are largely preventable, Nadda urged people to prioritise their health through small, consistent habits.

Healthy Habits Prevent Strokes

He shared in a post on social media platform X, “Today, we observe World Stroke Day, a day that reminds us of the need to raise awareness about stroke prevention and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”

He added, “Strokes can happen without warning, but many are avoidable through mindful daily choices. By eating nutritious food, staying active, and managing stress, we can lower our risk and live longer, healthier lives. Let’s take this day to learn, share, and make health our top priority.”

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked or reduced, cutting off oxygen and nutrients.

Brain cells begin to die within seconds, which is why seeking immediate medical help within the first 4.5 hours.

This is known as the ‘Golden Hour’, crucial for recovery and survival.

Delay in treatment can lead to permanent brain damage or long-term disability.

Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav also underscored the need for preventive care.

He said on X, “On World Stroke Day, let’s remember that a healthy lifestyle is the best medicine against stroke. Eat well, stay active, and manage stress. Take charge of your health!”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) urged people to quit smoking and alcohol, control blood pressure and cholesterol, and manage diabetes.

Maintain a healthy weight and exercise for at least 30 minutes daily.

<p>Globally, strokes affect nearly 12 million people every year and cause over 7 million deaths, yet experts estimate that up to 90 per cent of strokes are preventable through healthy lifestyle changes.
