Grammy Winning Iranian Singer Sentenced To Prison for Protest Anthem Over Death Of Mahsa Amini

An Iranian singer, who was honored with a Grammy presented by US First Lady Jill Biden, has been sentenced to over three years in prison for his anthem supporting the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. Shervin Hajipour shared part of the judgment on Instagram, revealing a three-year, eight-month sentence for charges of “propaganda against the system” and “encouraging people to protest.”

The court cited his alleged lack of remorse for publishing the song. Additionally, a two-year travel ban was imposed, along with an order to create a song about “US crimes” and to post about them online. Despite thanking his legal team and agent for their support, Hajipour refrained from naming the judge and prosecutor to prevent insults and threats. He expressed hope for understanding in the future.

While Iranian state media focused on the parliamentary election, Hajipour’s sentence went unreported. Hajipour’s song, “Baraye,” which became synonymous with the Mahsa Amini protests, highlighted grievances against Iran’s ruling theocracy. The protests, triggered by Amini’s death allegedly due to her attire, escalated into broader demands for political change, resulting in a severe crackdown and numerous casualties. Jill Biden praised the song’s significance during the Grammy ceremony, noting its resonance with themes of freedom and women’s rights.

Hajipour’s sentencing adds to a concerning trend of activists, journalists, and artists facing repression in Iran since the protests, drawing condemnation from human rights organizations.
