Stock markets began the new fiscal year on a strong note on Monday, with benchmark Sensex and Nifty setting new record highs in intra-day trade before closing in the green, aided by strong trends in Asian markets and foreign capital inflows.
The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 363.20 points or 0.49 percent to 74,014.55. During the day, it surged 603.27 points or 0.81 percent to a record intra-day high of 74,254.62.
The NSE Nifty advanced 135.10 points or 0.61 percent to 22,462. During the day, it gained 203.05 points or 0.90 percent to reach an all-time high of 22,529.95.
The top gainers were JSW Steel, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement, NTPC, Larsen & Toubro, and HDFC Bank.
Among the laggards were Titan, Nestle, Bharti Airtel, and IndusInd Bank.
In Asian markets, Seoul and Shanghai finished higher, while Tokyo closed lower.
Wall Street concluded on a mixed note on Thursday.
According to exchange data, Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought securities worth Rs 188.31 crore on Thursday.
Brent crude lost 0.10 percent to $86.91 per barrel.
Equity markets were closed on Good Friday.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, the BSE benchmark went up 14,659.83 points or 24.85 percent, while the Nifty spiked 4,967.15 points or 28.61 percent.
