PM Hasina Inaugurates Bangladesh’s Largest Infrastructure Project, Developed With Chinese Assistance

The remaining leg of the project connecting Jessore is planned to be launched in June

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 82-kilometre Padma Bridge Rail Link on Tuesday, the country’s largest infrastructure project developed under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Hasina unveiled the Dhaka-Bhanga segment of the rail link connecting Dhaka and Jashore over the Padma Bridge from Munshiganj’s Mawa Railway Station.

According to project managers, the remaining leg of the project connecting Jessore is planned to be launched in June of next year.

The Padma Bridge Rail Link, according to the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, is a milestone project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as well as the largest infrastructure project in Bangladesh using Chinese preferential loans.

He said that as one of the most important infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, it will directly benefit 80 million people and enhance economic growth by 1.5 percent.

The project is anticipated to cost Tk 39,246.80 crore, with the Exim Bank of China giving a loan of Tk 21,036.70 crore, according to the report.
