Bill To Remove Chief Justice From Panel Appointing Election Commissioner Dropped From Parliament Agenda

The bill seeks to replace the Chief Justice of India from panel that advises the president in the appointment of Election Commissioner.

According to sources, the government did not include the controversial bill regarding the appointment of senior election officials in the list of eight bills it gave to the opposition at the all-party meeting on Sunday. The gathering took place on the eve of parliament’s five-day special session.

Amendment of Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of ServBill to Remove Chief Justice from Panel Appointing Election Commissioner Dropped From Parliament Agenda ice and Term of Office) is being considered.

As the bill strips the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners of their status as Supreme Court judges, there is opposition to it. It suggests that the CEC and other ECs’ pay, benefits, and working conditions will be similar to the Cabinet secretary which also faced objection.

The bill seeks to replace the Chief Justice of India from panel that advises the president in the appointment of Election Commissioner. In March, as per the Supreme Court judgement the panel should comprise of PM, Chief Justice of India and Opposition of Leader in Lok Sabha.
