Two maoists died in the forest area of Sukma district of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division on Tuesday.
The Maoists had a Rs 1 lakh bounty on each of their heads and murder cases were lodged against them. During an anti-Maoist operation, a joint squad of District Reserve Guards and Central Reserve Police Force engaged in gunfire with a number of Naxal cadres.
Sukma deputy SP Rajat Nag said, “Police had received specific inputs about the presence of Maoists of Jagargunda area committee in forests of Tadmetla in Chintagufa region of Sukma. Based on the information that they were hacking out a plan for major attack, a joint team of battalion 203rd of CRPF and DRG went out on an operation.”
Around 6 am on Tuesday, when the security force was traversing a forest between Tadmetla and Minpa, a group of armed Maoists fired randomly at them. This was met with retaliation, leading to an encounter.
After the gunfire stopped and Maoists fled into the forest, security personnel sanitized the area and found two male Maoist bodies, according to Nag.
“The duo was identified as Sori Deva and Rama Deva, both residents of Tadmetla and militia cadres of Jagargunda area committee. They have crimes recorded in Chintagufa and Chintalnar police stations after they had killed a ‘shikshadoot’ (teacher) Kawasi Sukka and deputy sarpanch of Tadmetla panchayat Madvi Ganga on June 28 at a jan adalat,” Nag said adding that they had also murdered one Korsa Kosi on August 31 accusing him of working as police informer.
The teacher and deputy sarpanch were kidnapped from their home by a Maoist group, who then executed them in a forest and dumped their bodies on the outskirts of the hamlet.
A 12-bore double rifle, a pistol, uniforms, raincoats, and other items used by the Maoists in the forest have also been found by the police.
