Weather conditions across India are set to change as the southwest monsoon continues to withdraw and the northeast monsoon prepares to become active over southern India.
A western disturbance is likely to bring rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to Delhi-NCR, while the capital’s air quality remains in the moderate category.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several parts of the country may experience thunderstorms and lightning on Thursday.
The department has forecast rain and strong winds across the north-western plains, with the possibility of hailstorms in some areas.
After scattered rainfall on Wednesday, Delhi-NCR is likely to receive more rain on Thursday. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and possible hailstorms in isolated areas of Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, western Uttar Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan.
Winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching 60 kmph in some locations, are likely in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab and Uttarakhand.
Parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan may experience winds of 30–40 kmph. Rain and lightning are also possible in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe. Isolated areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh and south interior Karnataka may also receive heavy rain. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely across parts of southern India.
The southwest monsoon continues to retreat. On October 14, the withdrawal line passed through Dhubri, Kolkata, Angul, Khammam and Honavar. Conditions are becoming favourable for its further withdrawal.
As the southwest monsoon retreats, the northeast monsoon prepares to bring rainfall to southern India. During this transition, different weather systems can affect northern and southern regions simultaneously.
Delhi’s air quality remained moderate, although some monitoring stations recorded higher readings. Alipur recorded an AQI of 220, followed by Sirifort at 217 and Dwarka Sector 8 at 205. Chandni Chowk recorded 200, Burari Crossing 179, Aya Nagar 162, Jharoda Kalan 152, Ghoga 146, Nangloi 138 and Tikri Kalan 113.
