For Gen Z, cooking is no longer just about putting food on the table. It’s a wellness ritual, a creative outlet, and a mindful escape from digital overload.
The younger generation is transforming the kitchen into a space of self-expression, focusing on health, protein-rich meals, and experimentation with diverse cuisines.
Twenty-eight-year-old YouTuber and content creator Gopali Tiwari from Surat embodies this shift.
She began exploring vegetarian protein recipes after starting her fitness journey. “I recreate viral recipes and explore Indian dishes beyond the typical North-South divide – Odiya meals like poita bhaat or Nepali aloo chukauni,” she said. “These dishes aren’t well-known but deserve a place on our plates.”
For Sannidhya Bilwal, a 23-year-old psychology student from Delhi, cooking is about convenience and balance. “I live with my brother, so I cook in bulk: rice, dal, and some protein like kebabs or fish. It saves time and keeps meals nutritious,” he said.
Nutrition experts note that Gen Z’s food habits reflect a conscious approach to health and aesthetics.
They prioritise lean proteins, healthy fats, and visually appealing dishes, often designed to look ‘Instagram-ready.’ But behind the social media sheen lies something deeper, cooking as therapy.
Many young people describe chopping, stirring, and plating as mindful, stress-relieving acts that help them disconnect from constant screen time.
The generation’s approach also celebrates regional Indian recipes, plant-based meals, and sustainable eating.
Instead of chasing global fads, many Gen Z cooks rediscover traditional dishes, embracing local ingredients and simple cooking styles that align with their values of authenticity and wellness.
Food, for them, is no longer just consumption; it’s a connection. It links culture, creativity, and care.
In essence, Gen Z is rewriting modern cooking culture. The kitchen has become their laboratory, studio, and sanctuary, where nourishment goes beyond taste to feed both body and mind.
For this generation, cooking isn’t a chore; it’s a lifestyle, one that blends health, mindfulness, and the joy of creation.
