Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in Thimphu on Tuesday, reaffirming India’s role as a trusted development partner in Bhutan’s progress.
The leaders discussed cooperation in energy, connectivity, defence, technology, and health while also addressing regional and global concerns of mutual interest.
King Wangchuck extended condolences for the victims of the Delhi blast, while Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for the visionary leadership of Bhutan’s successive Druk Gyalpos in nurturing the friendship between the two nations.
During the visit, the two leaders jointly inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a major milestone in India-Bhutan energy cooperation that benefits both nations’ citizens.
They also oversaw the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in renewable energy, healthcare, and mental health services.
The Indian government announced a concessional Line of Credit worth ₹4,000 crore for Bhutan to support new energy initiatives, further underscoring India’s long-term commitment to Bhutan’s sustainable growth.
Prayers, Heritage and Tribute to the Fourth King
Prime Minister Modi and King Wangchuck offered prayers before the Holy Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India, which are currently enshrined at Thimphu’s Grand Kuenrey Hall.
The relics’ exposition coincides with the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and the Global Peace Prayer Festival.
Earlier, PM Modi joined Bhutan’s royal family and citizens at Changlimithang Stadium to celebrate the Fourth King’s milestone birthday.
He praised the monarch’s visionary leadership that transformed Bhutan into a modern constitutional democracy and introduced the globally admired philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
Prime Minister Modi expressed deep gratitude to the people of Bhutan for offering prayers for the victims of the Delhi blast, calling it a moving gesture of solidarity and compassion.
He reaffirmed that the India-Bhutan partnership would continue to thrive under the guidance of Bhutan’s royal family, celebrating an enduring friendship rooted in shared culture, spirituality, and trust.
