The Kremlin has expressed its support for any agreement that could lead to a ceasefire in Gaza, welcoming efforts that seek to end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of its people.
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, remarked on Thursday that any settlement contributing to a ceasefire and Israel’s security could only be welcomed.
Moscow Expresses Support Ceasefire Agreement
Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire-for-hostages deal after extensive mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, includes an initial 42-day phase where hostilities between the two sides will cease.
This breakthrough follows weeks of negotiations in Doha, to halt the over 15 months of fighting in Gaza. The ceasefire may evolve into a more permanent resolution, contingent on successful implementation during the first phase.
Ceasefire Agreement Prioritises Hostages And Humanitarian Aid
The ceasefire agreement also prioritizes the release of 33 Israeli hostages during this initial phase. Special attention will be given to women, children, the elderly, and those ill or injured. In return, Israel is expected to release Palestinian prisoners.
US President Joe Biden confirmed the development on Wednesday, expressing optimism for the hostages’ safe return to their families. He also emphasized that the ceasefire would enable Palestinians to return to their homes and allow for an increase in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Forces to Withdraw, Facilitating Humanitarian Efforts
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israeli forces will withdraw from densely populated areas in Gaza. This will facilitate prisoner exchanges, the return of displaced individuals, and the retrieval of remains. The ongoing conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, has had devastating consequences, with nearly 1,200 Israelis killed in Hamas’ initial attack and over 46,000 Palestinians reported dead as a result of the subsequent Israeli offensive.
The situation remains fluid, and further negotiations will likely shape the future of the ceasefire and potential peace in the region.
