Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a theatrical production inspired by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Anand Math at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat’s Narmada district on Friday, ahead of the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Presented by the National School of Drama, the production, titled Anand Math: Maa Ne Phir Bulaya Hai, featured around 300 performers on a 100-by-100-foot stage.
The 90-minute performance reinterpreted the 1882 novel, which introduced ‘Vande Mataram’, India’s national song, highlighting themes of patriotism, sacrifice and national consciousness.
The presentation connected the novel’s historical significance with contemporary India, emphasising citizens’ responsibility towards the nation while preserving its cultural traditions.
This year’s Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations hold additional significance as ‘Vande Mataram’ completes 150 years.
The performance formed part of the two-day celebrations at Ekta Nagar, home to the Statue of Unity.
The evening programme featured Ekta Prakash Parv, an illuminated showcase of India’s heritage, diversity and development.
More than 1.5 crore LED lights illuminate displays along a 530-metre route on Valley of Flowers Road and a 180-metre Glow Tunnel showcasing regional traditions, architecture, folk dances and handicrafts.
PM Modi launched Bharat Parv 2026, which will run until November 15, showcasing the traditions, cuisines, crafts and tourism attractions of states and Union Territories.
On Saturday, the Prime Minister will likely pay tribute to Patel at the Statue of Unity and inaugurate projects while laying foundation stones for tourism and infrastructure works worth over ₹426 crore.
Planned attractions include an IRCTC hotel, Ekta Cruise, a rainforest facility and an Eco Trail, alongside upgrades to visitor amenities and essential services.
