Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to participate in a special session of Parliament to debate allegations of ‘vote chori’, saying the BJP had no objection to an extensive discussion on the issue.
Addressing a meeting of the newly formed Uttar Pradesh BJP Executive Committee in Lucknow, Shah said the Centre was ready to convene a special parliamentary session to examine allegations of electoral malpractice and concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
“I am ready to call a special session of Parliament to discuss vote chori. But Rahul baba will never agree. He will never discuss the issue in Parliament but will create a nuisance on the street,” Shah said.
The Minister urged Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav to raise their complaints against the Election Commission in Parliament rather than through street protests.
Dismissing the allegations against the poll body as baseless, Shah accused Opposition parties of seeking political confrontation instead of parliamentary debate.
The remarks come as the BJP and Opposition parties remain locked in a dispute over the electoral roll revision exercise and alleged voter list manipulation.
The INDIA bloc has announced several protest plans, including an impeachment-style initiative against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a large gathering at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground.
Opposition parties have described their campaign as a fight against the alleged ‘demolition of democracy’ and argued that the SIR exercise could favour the BJP.
Using a cricket analogy, Shah accused Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders of blaming election authorities after electoral defeats instead of strengthening their organisations.
“After losing the match, they are blaming the umpire and alleging vote theft,” he said.
