Despite the political numbers game, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the departing Union Cabinet on Wednesday that politicians should work for the nation and its residents, according to sources.
“The number game will continue. According to the reports, he remarked, “You keep working for the nation and society,” at a meeting with the departing cabinet. “For ten years, good work has been done. That needs to be pursued,” he remarked.
Modi was speaking a day after his National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 292 of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, 20 more than the majority threshold. On its own, his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received 240 votes. Over the weekend, Modi may take the oath of office as prime minister for a record-breaking third term, with the NDA seemingly poised to form the government.

The prime minister and the other members of his Union cabinet visited Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier on Wednesday to tender their resignations. Afterwards, NDA allies Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) will get together in the afternoon. Both Naidu, whose party won 16 seats, and Kumar, whose party won 12, are in the spotlight and are anticipated to come up frequently in discussions about the formation of a government.
Modi outlined his plans for a third term in his first statement following the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday night. He stated that eliminating corruption would be a key priority of his administration and that significant decisions will be made during his leadership.
“The battle against corruption is getting harder and harder every day. Politicians are shamelessly elevating corruption to a sacred status. In front of thunderous applause from his fans, PM Modi declared, “In our third term, NDA will focus a lot on rooting out corruption of all kinds.”
