Benchmark equity indices extended their gains for a fifth consecutive session on Tuesday, supported by strong buying in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), realty and metal stocks.

Gains across broader markets lifted investor sentiment, although information technology shares remained under pressure.

The BSE Sensex advanced 383.55 points, or 0.5 per cent, to close at 77,301.40. The NSE Nifty gained 149.75 points, or 0.63 per cent, to settle at 23,960.60.

Despite the sustained buying momentum, the Nifty failed to cross the crucial psychological resistance level of 24,000.

Market analysts said a decisive and sustained move above this mark could strengthen bullish sentiment and open the door to further gains.

On the downside, analysts identified the 23,750–23,700 range as an immediate support zone. They said the index must hold above this level to maintain its positive momentum.

Among Nifty constituents, Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises and Titan Company emerged as the top gainers.

The broader market recorded stronger advances, with the Nifty MidCap 100 rising 1.55 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap 100 surging 2 per cent.

Sectoral performance remained largely positive. Nifty Media, Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty led the gains, while Nifty IT declined more than 1 per cent, making it the worst-performing sectoral index.

Analysts attributed the continued rally to improving investor confidence and buying across consumption-linked, real estate and commodity stocks, which offset weakness in technology shares. They further pointed to expectations of possible tax relief in the upcoming Union Budget, better-than-expected quarterly earnings and resilient festive demand as factors supporting domestic equities.

Looking ahead, market participants will track corporate earnings, crude oil prices and global developments for further direction.

Analysts advised investors to remain selective in their stock positions amid continuing geopolitical uncertainties.
