Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Sharad Pawar to enquire about his health, triggering political speculation in Maharashtra.
Close associates of the veteran leader described the interaction as a courtesy call.
Confirming the conversation, Pawar’s family friend and close associate Vitthal Maniyar told reporters outside Pune’s Ruby Hall Clinic that the Prime Minister had called early in the morning and warmly advised the senior politician to prioritise his health and take rest.
According to Maniyar, PM Modi told Pawar that his daughter, Supriya Sule, and others would take care of the country, while he should focus on recovering. He further sought the veteran leader’s blessings.
Pawar thanked the Prime Minister for enquiring about his well-being and said he had no concerns about the country’s affairs with everyone around to handle them.
The exchange attracted attention amid Maharashtra’s political developments, with speculation emerging over its possible implications for political equations in the state.
Pawar’s close aides maintained that the conversation centred on his health.
Maniyar confirmed that Pawar was stable and had no serious complications. The 85-year-old leader had experienced a cough and chest congestion two days earlier.
Pawar completed treatment and routine medical checks at Ruby Hall Clinic before leaving for his Mumbai residence, Silver Oak, with his daughter, Supriya Sule.
Doctors advised him to rest for two to four days, restrict travel and follow a strict diet. His personal medical team will monitor his recovery.
Sule said her father was feeling better and thanked the hospital staff and well-wishers for their support.
