BJP MP Varun Gandhi
BJP MP Varun Gandhi has decided not to run in the polls against his cousin Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency. According to the sources, the BJP was eager to field Varun Gandhi from Raebareli, a Congress bastion since 2004.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may run from the seat, according to Congress insiders. Before being elected to the Rajya Sabha in February this year, her mother, Sonia Gandhi, the former head of the Congress, had represented the Raebareli seat since 2004.
After Sonia Gandhi declared she would not run in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, there was much speculation that the Congress will field Priyanka Gandhi from Raebareli.
According to sources, the BJP invited Varun Gandhi to run against his cousin amid these rumors, but he decided not to run from Raebareli seat.
Sources close to Varun Gandhi stated that he want to avoid the kind of attention that a “Gandhi vs. Gandhi” contest would bring.
Currently serving as the Pilibhit MP is Varun Gandhi the BJP chose to withdraw him from the Pilibhit poll in favor of former minister Jitin Prasada in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Following that, Varun Gandhi declared in an open letter to the Pilibhit residents that he would always remain a son of the land. The BJP fielded his mother, veteran legislator Maneka Gandhi, from the Sultanpur seat in Uttar Pradesh once more.
According to reports, the BJP ran a number of polls and surveys to determine who would be a serious rival to the Gandhis in Raebareli.
Even before Sonia Gandhi began serving as its representative in 2004, the seat has remained a bastion of the Congress. After gaining the Raebareli seat in 1967, former prime minister Indira Gandhi was repeatedly sent to the Lok Sabha.
