In the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other party officials, Archana Patil Chakurkar, the daughter-in-law of former Union Home Minister and Congress politician Shivraj Patil, joined the BJP on Saturday in Maharashtra.
Devendra Fadnavis stated that Archana Patil Chakurkar would strengthen the BJP in Maharashtra before the Lok Sabha elections, speaking at a news conference in Mumbai.
Fadnavis said, “It is a matter of pleasure for us that someone from the family of Shivraj Patil, who was a senior leader of Congress and was also Speaker of Lok Sabha and was the Union Home Minister, is joining our party. It is a big thing… This will strengthen the party…,”
Chakurkar visited Fadnavis at his official residence on Friday. Her husband, Shailesh Patil Chandurkar, is the state secretary of the Congress, and she is the chairperson of the Lifecare Hospital and Research Centre in Udgir.
Shivraj Patil, Archana’s father-in-law, was Speaker of the Lok Sabha from July 10, 1991, to May 22, 1996. He also held the position of Union Home Minister in the UPA administration led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2008.
In addition, Patil served as the Union Home Minister on 26/11, the day of the terror attacks in Mumbai that left at least 192 people dead. On November 30, 2008, he announced his resignation from the position due to backlash following the attacks.
Former state Congress working president and former MLA Basavraj Patil joined the BJP earlier in February of this year.
Maharashtra’s 48 Lok Sabha constituencies will vote in five stages beginning on April 19.
